If you have any question and/or suggestion in regards to the community, feel free to comment in this post.

If your suggestion is about themes, go here; and if you have any first doubt about claims check here... this post is for all that doesn't fit in any other post. You're also welcomed to PM me if you prefer to do so but I thought that any doubt that one user might have could solve a future user's question and thus this space.

Duuumb question but do video game series / animanga series count for claims? I saw movies and TV shows, but wasn't sure if I could do a claim for either.

I didn't see anything in the rules and I know everyone is different about this. Are icons made from fanart allowed? It seems people are generally 50/50 on this topic so I just wanted to make sure. I don't mind one way or the other, but if I'm allowed I'll use fanart and if I'm not, it's just all the more challenging. :)

I just mean in general. The subject I chose has lots of official art from the animation studios. In the case of some anime or computer games/programs there is more fanart than there is official art/stills/etc. Popular examples are Axis Powers Hetalia and Vocaloid. Some icon challenge communities don't allow fanart because they feel you are 'stealing' from the fanartist, where others don't mind because that fanartist doesn't own the character anyway so I was just asking if it was okay for future reference if I did choose a subject that had more fanart than official stuff. I just like knowing my options.

But I do tend to make more icons from the official stuff, to be fair.

Some artists do specify, but that is usually on their site or gallery page. In which case that can sometimes be lost in transit when the image is reposted elsewhere, like on an image board or a photobucket. I know some artists are like me (I draw fanart) and find it flattering when people use their art in icons while others get their proverbial panties in a twist. It tends to happen more on bigger sites, and to be fair, I've been making icons from fanart for years and have only been asked to remove an icon once. So, really, it depends on how much of a life the artist has, I think. Not to sound mean, or anything... :x

I probably wouldn't use only fanart unless I specified it in the claim, like I said I just like having my options in case there is a theme that I have a fanart image that's better suited for it than an official one. :)

You can count on me to be honest, for sure. :D I don't go on fanart hunts/raids but about once a month anyway.

Since I've never done anything like this before (I'm not familiar with the other challenges of the type), I'm here with the stupid question... how does it work? Is there a challenge daily that we need to respond to, or is the entire list posted on the 1st and we have 20 days to get our icons done and post them?

I think I'm good now! Can't wait to see the themes/categories and get started iconning.

I'm back with more questions before claiming for this round! I'm using random examples, not my actual claims...

If I claim a story (for example, a fairy tale) which has been made in media in many different formats, can I claim the base story and use images from several different formats (book illlustrations, animated movies, live action movies)?

If I claim a character who has appeared in both movies and spin-off television shows for the same series (or in reverse order), can I user images from both tv and movies or should I restrict to one or the other? An example here might be Daniel Jackson who crosses between the original Stargate movie, as well as the main series, and several of the spin-off series, and between all of that has two different faces.

And a clarification... if I claim a show / movie / band or other group, I need to icon at least two members/ characters but not in the same icon, yes? IE, if I claim SG1 as a whole, I'd need to make icons of at least two characters (we'll use Sam and Daniel as examples here) but the icons can be of one or the other character, yes?

I'm just trying to make sure I understand my limits and the places where I can push them. Then I need to decide which thing on my list of fandoms is the one I want to attack next!

Thank you for responding so quickly!

Okay, on the story then, I'd better make sure I have access to images from all the possible sources, so that means THAT one ain't happening this round. Since the particular story I want to claim has at least four potential sources that are very high profile, plus a few others that are lower profile. My thought was to mix and match and combine sources into single images... so I might also need a bit more skill before I get there too.

Gotcha on the character going across multiple shows/movies. I'll make sure if I use that one that I specify.

And excellent, that's what I needed to know on show/band.

I'm still waffling on a claim for this round since I have so so SO many thoughts. I'm really ready to just go through the next year.

I assume that in subsequent rounds, people can claim things that were claimed before in prior rounds? Can we ever go back and do the same claim we had once before? Like, a year from now could I claim William again? Not that I'm planning on it, I'm just curious. Especially since with a show claim (like Glee, which has such a large ensemble cast) 20 icons is barely the tip of what could be done with it.

If you feel like doing different media but don't have all of them available and are not sure about their availability, you may just let me know, I've no problem giving some room to the iconmakers I just think the more clear the rules the better since if I say 'claim anything and then do icons of whatever' that would be chaos XD

Awesome, I may need this in the future, although really, I'm going to try to get all the caps BEFORE I claim something so I know what I'm working with. And it's less time consuming!

My thought was to mix and match and combine sources into single images... so I might also need a bit more skill before I get there too.
wow. that sounds wickedly cool.

It probably sounds WAY cooler than I have the ability to execute. *smiles* But hey, it's on my list of things to do in the future!

I don't know why my answer went way past the topic of your question.
If you wanted to claim William for the next round (June) you could do so.

Perfect. I don't need William back right away, but certain shows like Glee and Degrassi and Skins I could easily see myself rotating around several times. But just in case, I locked myself into one character for Degrassi this round.

And yes, I agree on the love of diversity in iconning and I'm trying to do the same thing myself. Which is why I know I'll have topics for a while. I figure, if I pick the fandom, you post the prompts, and that's what kicks off the rest of the creativity for me. Right?

We can work with anything! That surpassing you see is us going "ummmmm..." and figuring out a fun way to make it work. :)

But then, I maintain that most of my icons are happy accidents.

Y'know, one thought is to have invitations to post tutorials... either judge's choice for tutorials, or for winning icons, or whatever... I know there are a lot of things where I'm curious how the effect was achieved. And I, for one, wouldn't mind sharing where mine went from planned into happy oopses.

I think what you've posted is an excellent way to start out. I'm just looking for ways to share the techniques I already have, and to learn new techniques.

Hm. There's a graphic_tutorial comm I joined yesterday, but I'm not sure if there's a specific icon_tutorial comm. *goes to look * Oh. Okay, so there's a comm. It has one member, who created it, and that journal is deleted... I wonder if there's a way to do something about that... I'd be happy to moderate that comm.

I keep the PSD files when I do artsy icons. When I do PB icons (which are literally crop / sharpen / light correct) I don't bother, but then, I also whip those things out at 70 in an hour when I'm working hard and not distracted.

I did a tutorial for [community profile] severalplums last night because I was invited to for challenge #88. Every once in a while there's something I did that isn't obvious later on from the PSD file (like, I just made a text icon that for the background I made it dark red, then used a fibers filter, then used a motion blur, and none of that is layered so I might forget it) but mostly, the PSD file will help me reconstruct.

The comm I found was [community profile] icon_tutorial. I wonder who we ask about it? I mean, not only is it not used, but the person who made it deleted their journal... I'm just thinking because it is the most obvious name choice. Although the name icon_tutorials is completely open...

I started out with layers and curves / saturation / color / etc. and have just been playing more and more with whatever I can for the artsy stuff. I can do curves in my sleep now. Seriously.

Text I still have a love/hate relationship with. When it works, I love it. When it doesn't... oh do I ever hate it. It's a fight! But I keep fighting it, too.

That's what I was thinking -- I wanted the name that was easiest to find! The one that's pretty instinctive and expected, and I think having the other one could get confusing. Hopefully there is someone to ask who can help!

I do both kinds. And when I say PB icons, I mean the really simplistic sort used for roleplay, like this one I found on IJ that I'm using for my Degrassi icon (why yes, THAT is why I claimed Riley, so I'd be nudged into making my OWN icons).

I think if you spend the time on an artistic crop as opposed to one just designed to show face and expression, and if any masking is done at all, anything other than simple light/color, then it counts as artsy. For me, I think I define that as anything I spend more than a minute or two on as artsy. :)

Maybe we should just go with icontutorial so we can set it up properly from the start? I'd had to start asking people to join a comm when we can't put up a proper profile for it, or edit any of its properties or anything, y'know what I mean?

It should also be a good place for resources, like posts about fonts, places to get brushes and masks, things like that, maybe? Because for me, that's a big part of what I need when making icons, finding all those silly little things that let me play with it in the hunt of the happy accidents.

Your bouncing elephant keeps distracting me... boing... boing... boing...

To me artsy is anything that takes time. Versus "utilitarian." :)

I'll go create it and add you. Then we need to get info onto the profile, make the sticky post (love that idea for the resources) and get at least one tutorial posted so we have something in it and can advertise it? We totally need people to come post things too. :)

And YES that's how I was looking at that icon. It's... distracting! *laughs*

One question is that if you claim something that is both are manga and anime, can you pull pictures from both sources or do you have to limit yourself to one?

This is probably a rather odd question, but is there any way to change the table code so that it'd work better in DW's default style entry pages?

...What I mean is, if your entry pages show up in DW's default style, the icons are squeezed together (example). If you use customized pages, the table looks like it should (example).

It's probably DW's fault: when I tested the table on LJ, it worked whether the entry page was in default style or customized. It's just a minor annoyance so no worries, but I thought I might as well ask since I was wondering about it. :)

From: [personal profile] darlingfox
Maybe DW just doesn't allow you to post five icons in a row, no matter how you code the table? Well, I'm no good at coding so it's just a guess...

Anyway, please don't spend too much time on the table! Like I said, it's just a minor annoyance and since the table looks so nice otherwise, I'm happy to use it. :D

I was curious if you would be able to promote [community profile] anicontest in one of your reminder posts just to kind of spread word about the community. A lot of participants here do make anime icons and it was recommended that I asked you to do that.

Would you also like to affiliate?

Thank you very kindly :D I've added [community profile] fandom20in20 to the user profile as well. I appreciate it.

I hope we start getting some submissions. I know a lot of people want to participate but it's hard to find the time during this month!
