Y'know, one thought is to have invitations to post tutorials... either judge's choice for tutorials, or for winning icons, or whatever... I know there are a lot of things where I'm curious how the effect was achieved. And I, for one, wouldn't mind sharing where mine went from planned into happy oopses.

I think what you've posted is an excellent way to start out. I'm just looking for ways to share the techniques I already have, and to learn new techniques.

Hm. There's a graphic_tutorial comm I joined yesterday, but I'm not sure if there's a specific icon_tutorial comm. *goes to look * Oh. Okay, so there's a comm. It has one member, who created it, and that journal is deleted... I wonder if there's a way to do something about that... I'd be happy to moderate that comm.

I keep the PSD files when I do artsy icons. When I do PB icons (which are literally crop / sharpen / light correct) I don't bother, but then, I also whip those things out at 70 in an hour when I'm working hard and not distracted.

I did a tutorial for [community profile] severalplums last night because I was invited to for challenge #88. Every once in a while there's something I did that isn't obvious later on from the PSD file (like, I just made a text icon that for the background I made it dark red, then used a fibers filter, then used a motion blur, and none of that is layered so I might forget it) but mostly, the PSD file will help me reconstruct.

The comm I found was [community profile] icon_tutorial. I wonder who we ask about it? I mean, not only is it not used, but the person who made it deleted their journal... I'm just thinking because it is the most obvious name choice. Although the name icon_tutorials is completely open...

I started out with layers and curves / saturation / color / etc. and have just been playing more and more with whatever I can for the artsy stuff. I can do curves in my sleep now. Seriously.

Text I still have a love/hate relationship with. When it works, I love it. When it doesn't... oh do I ever hate it. It's a fight! But I keep fighting it, too.

That's what I was thinking -- I wanted the name that was easiest to find! The one that's pretty instinctive and expected, and I think having the other one could get confusing. Hopefully there is someone to ask who can help!

I do both kinds. And when I say PB icons, I mean the really simplistic sort used for roleplay, like this one I found on IJ that I'm using for my Degrassi icon (why yes, THAT is why I claimed Riley, so I'd be nudged into making my OWN icons).

I think if you spend the time on an artistic crop as opposed to one just designed to show face and expression, and if any masking is done at all, anything other than simple light/color, then it counts as artsy. For me, I think I define that as anything I spend more than a minute or two on as artsy. :)

Maybe we should just go with icontutorial so we can set it up properly from the start? I'd had to start asking people to join a comm when we can't put up a proper profile for it, or edit any of its properties or anything, y'know what I mean?

It should also be a good place for resources, like posts about fonts, places to get brushes and masks, things like that, maybe? Because for me, that's a big part of what I need when making icons, finding all those silly little things that let me play with it in the hunt of the happy accidents.

Your bouncing elephant keeps distracting me... boing... boing... boing...

To me artsy is anything that takes time. Versus "utilitarian." :)

I'll go create it and add you. Then we need to get info onto the profile, make the sticky post (love that idea for the resources) and get at least one tutorial posted so we have something in it and can advertise it? We totally need people to come post things too. :)

And YES that's how I was looking at that icon. It's... distracting! *laughs*
